Part E refers to Approved Document E of the national Building Regulations which provides guidance on how to provide reasonable standards of sound insulation in dwellings and other residential buildings
From July 2003, the regulation authorities tightened the standards of sound insulation for both separating walls and floors AND internal walls and floors for all residential buildings.
Separating floors and walls between domestic dwellings are required to meet a minimum sound insulation performance standard. This applies to both new 'purpose built' and converted 'material change of use' properties.

There are two methods of compliance to the Approved Part E Document,
- Pre-Completion Testing
Pre Completion Sound Tests have been required since July 2003 to ensure compliance with Approved Document E unless the robust details approach is adopted. This applies to any kind of building used as dwelling or residential purposes including houses apartments and flats that are new built or created as a result of conversations or material change of use.
- Robust Details
Robust Details was an initiative formed in response to the house building industry's need for an alternative means of compliance with Approved Document E to Pre-Completion Testing.
Detail constructions are separating wall or floor construction that have been assessed and approved by Robust Details Limited, as capable of consistently exceeding the performance standards given in Building Regulations Approved Document E.
